"Positive/Negative Treatment of my elderly Mother"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department The Ulster Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My mum was sent up to the hospital recently by her GP, she was quite ill.   She went to the Ulster A and E and can I just say how well she was treated.   She was told by the young Dr that she needed to be admitted even though mum didn't want to but she accepted.   The poor Doc's and nurses seemed run off their feet doing an amazing job with little resources they hard and climbing over patients scattered everywhere.

Mum was sitting on a chair all day and into the night in so much pain with her lungs but never complained.   A lovely young nurse told mum to follow her and they kindly gave her a wee room with a bed because no bed was available, they did offer mum a bed in the corridor but she is 78 nearly 79 and was frightened.   They understood.

A consultant came and saw mum the next day and said to my wee mum that she really wasn't well and she would be in until Friday if longer and mum resigned herself to that.

The staff in A and E were amazing with her and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

The early hours of wed morning an abrupt nurse woke up mum up and told her we have a bed and could she walk.   Mum was breathless enough without having to do a marathon to a bed at 12. 30am.  she was in an old ward with other patients who yelled all night so mum didn't get a sleep

The ward had deteriorated and stuff was coming off the walls beside mum.

Later that morning a Dr with an arrogant manner came and said to my mum that she was going home and asked if she was she happy about that.   The doctor said that they would do this and that, so many tests that she had to do before she went home.

They sent her to a place where they tested her breathing and basically called her a liar that she took a sneaky breath.   It made her feel awful.

They then had her walking up and down the ward.   my mum is ill not preparing her to climb a mountain.   Someone from pharmacy came and said give me 15 mins and I have your stuff, mum saw with her own eyes this member of staff chatting for over an hour and still hadn't come back to her. eventually a nurse came with her stuff.   The treatment she got was disgusting in the wards compared to the A and E.   It felt like they were just  trying to clear beds.   My mum is still ill, with no diagnosis, no better off.   I am so annoyed how she was treated

Dear PA73,

My name is Richard and I am the facilitator for Care Opinion within the South Eastern Trust.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback about your mother’s experience. During times of increased pressure I am heartened to hear the positive feedback regarding the experience in Ulster A and E (Emergency Department). I will ensure that this is passed on to staff in this area.

As we are still in the implementation phase of Care Opinion here in South Eastern Trust I will reach out to a member of the Medical Team to respond in regards to your mother’s experience in the wards.

I am genuinely so sorry that you feel annoyed at how your mother was treated and that your overall experience of care at the Ulster Hospital was not positive.

I would like to once again thank you for sharing your experience with us for learning and improvement.

King Regards,

Richard

Thank you so much for your quick response to my story. It is such a great idea to be able to have a voice and help someone else have a better experience than my mum in the ward. Also glad that the staff in A and E will be given the good feedback, people are very quick to complain so why not give praise where it's due.

Many thanks
