"Breastfeeding on leaving hospital"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I didn’t produce breastmilk as quickly as expected/hoped. The nurses in hospital helped with latching techniques but baby was not weighed and I was not checked to make sure I was producing milk before leaving hospital. Baby lost a lot of weight and ended up with jaundice so we arrived back at hospital a day after being let home. The nurses were very helpful in hospital however extra checks would have helped a very distraught baby and helpless first time mum during their first night at home. My baby is now on formula as I was too nervous to continue trying breastfeeding (although milk did come through a few days later) as on formula I now know my baby is definitely feeding well.

Dear Tangle123

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback regarding your personal experience and concerns with breastfeeding following the delivery of your baby.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your new arrival and to offer you our apology that your experience was not ideal.

I am sorry to hear that the nursing staff omitted to weigh your baby and follow up that you were producing sufficent breast milk upon discharge. I have forwarded your concerns to the Midwifery Nurse Manager for her review and to address all your concerns.

I am pleased to note however that you had a slightly more positive experience during your subsequent admission.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish your family well.

With best wishes

Sylvia
