"Birth experience ruined by staff"

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital

When giving birth to my son I felt the staff gave little emotional support and concentrated purely on numbers due to perhaps being too busy.

The room that I gave birth in was so small that I couldn’t walk around. The staff did not respect some of my wishes on my birth plan (eg. Kept turning on bright lights) and communicated poorly with my husband and myself.

After giving birth the recovery in the ward was great. Most staff were helpful and kind however one encounter was terribly rude. After trying to get my lethargic newborn to feed and calling for assistance, a staff member said to her colleague ‘another mum making a half arsed attempt to feed’. After this moment I no longer felt welcome or safe.

Some staff members were amazing but others made me feel like I wouldn’t never want to step foot into this hospital again.

Thank you for your taking the time to provide feedback of your experience at Royal Hampshire County Hospital. I am sorry to hear of your experience, in particular how it made you feel. This does not reflect the standard of care we strive to provide.

I have shared your feedback with the team, however, it would be very helpful if the senior maternity team could talk through with you how you felt, in order to improve things for future mothers. If you would be interested in doing that then please do contact our Customer Care Team at Customercare@hhft.nhs.uk or 01256 486766.

Once again, many thanks for your feedback and I am sorry that we did not get it right for you.

Alex Whitfield,

Chief Executive.
