"Refusal of testing for repeated Helicobacter Pylori Infection"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Wishaw / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I have a history of two bouts of Helicobactor Pylori infection. Last one was a year ago

Within months of the anti biotic treatment ending I was experiencing symptoms again.

I asked for a blood or breath test to confirm that the infection had returned, but I was refused this. The GP blamed ‘stress’, virus and some other unjustified statement as responsible for my symptoms through last year. By January 2020 I was very ill. Vomiting, extreme lethargy, nausia and unable to eat even small amounts of food.

Eventually Wishaw General ordered an endoscopy appointment for a months time. I telephoned the Endoscopy unit and asked for a sooner slot, which was available in two weeks time. This confirmed that I did in fact have the infection again. This is my 3rd bout of this infection. I have been given a weeks supply of antibiotics via a telephone consultation I had to request following a letter from Monklands hospital advising me to see a GP, Surely one weeks supply is not enough since I have two episodes of previous infection!

I feel I was constantly fobbed off by the GP. If the test had been carried out last year when I first requested it, I would not have had to endure these awful symptoms for 10 months.  I have no faith in the service I receive at this practice because of the irresponsible way I have been treated.

Any advice on how to avoid this ever happening again would be most welcome.

Dear K4thy 1,

I'm pleased to hear that you have a confirmed diagnosis following investigation and hope your current treatment clears your symptoms.

I'm unable to comment on the previous management of your condition, but I'm sorry to hear you've had a tough time.

I'd suggest that you might consider asking to see another GP when attending your next appointment if you are dissatisfied with the care you were given.

You could also contact the Practice Manager to discuss these issues. As GP are independent contractors the Practice Manager is responsible for looking into any concerns that people using their services have.

You can find more information about giving feedback or making a complaint through the NHS Lanarkshire website https://www.nhslanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk/feedback/

I wish you well with the ongoing management of your condition.

Kind regards

Rick
