"Waste of appointment - NHS Resources issue"

About: Stonehouse Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat University Hospital Wishaw / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

Hi,

I had what I believed to be an appointment with the doctor (at Stonehouse) about ear pain I was suffering. I had previously attended audiology at Wishaw and the nurse took a hearing test which was normal and advised that there was a growth/cyst in my ear which need to be seen by the doctor.

An appointment soon came in and I attended in Feb 2020. The doc I saw confirmed what I already knew and told me they would need to refer me to a colleague as their specialism was the nose not the ear!!  the colleague, the ear specialist was based at Wishaw so another appointment would be made!! This beggars belief being seen by the wrong doctor and needing referred again.

This in my mind is a complete waste of NHS resources and a waste of an appointment as well as my time off work and travelling to Stonehouse from my home some miles away. In appointment letters it states that a missed appointment costs the NHS £136, I also feel that a wasted appointment costs this and more. I will  now need to take more time off to attend the next appointment - hope its the right person this time!!! Coordination of appointments seems the key here - why was I not matched to an ear specialist by the referral management service - this would be the logical approach?

Thanks for getting in touch regarding your appointment. Whilst the staff followed the correct procedure when booking your appointment, your feedback has highlighted the need for a review of our booking protocols which will be undertaken over the coming months. In meantime we have booked you an appointment for this week.
