"Slow diagnosis"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran University Hospital Ayr / Neurology

(as the patient),

In 2013 I was bitten by an infected tick whilst walking my dogs. I did not notice the tick or develop the classic bullseye rash. Not that it would have helped in any case because GP's then as they as I believe they still do now, ignore the significance of either as indicative of Lyme disease. So 7 years later I still have not had a formal diagnosis...they have acquiesced to admit it might be a causative agent for the multifarious symptoms and causes for the autoimmune disorders that plagued me later because Lyme disease was not dealt with sooner.

I have to live with the consequences of that and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Lupus anticoagulant is an autoimmune disorder that makes your blood sticky and clots easily. I now have blood clots in my abdomen and one in my brain. I have not had a stroke, however, they consider that I was very lucky to escape more serious consequences of the disorder. I believe there is an association between Lupus anticoagulant and Lyme disease and once you have acquired one then you become vulnerable to other autoimmune disorders, 20 months ago I acquired Myasthenia gravis. Because of the lack of awareness of my local GP practice and the NHS specialists at the local hospital, it remained undiagnosed for over a year. It was not until I was emergency admitted to a TIA ward and tests were performed that finally, they could confirm I had Myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is rare according to the NHS, however, that should not excuse why hospitals are not geared up to cope with MG patients when they are in or near crisis. On one occasion I was discharged at 2 am and sent home in a taxi because there was not a bed available and it was a weekend with no consultant neurologist available to give advice. These are the ripe conditions for negligence to occur and patients become nothing more than a statistic.
