"Hospital catering"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as a relative),

a few points on food at the hospital

Why at the weekend does the hospital catering service grind to a halt?  The canteen is only open till 11.30 this is when they closed off the canteen and only serves breakfast till 11?  i thought the hospital was supposed to be 24/7. At the weekends wards are still open A&E is still open and so are some clinics.  I think the canteen should also offer a lunch service at the weekend.
The coffee shop you need to guess at the prices of the food as there are no price tags displayed. and a very limited offering of food. the shop is semi okay for food but its just okay.
we have been visiting a relative in the ward for a few weeks and can only come at weekend due to work and child care it would be nice to be able to take them to the canteen for lunch- anything would be better than the slop they give to patients in the ward.
my uncle has not eaten much while being in hospital as the ward food is disgusting.   I think its time something was actually done about it!  As a cook myself i would be mortified to serve what is served in the wards!!!

Dear Basicfood (as a relative),

We apologise that you felt that the Catering service fell below the high standards expected.

The Opening Hours of restaurant at the weekend are Pan Lanarkshire offering breakfast until 11.30am with an enhanced food service within the Coffee Shop at weekends.

We have reviewed the visibility of the pricing within both the restaurant and coffee shop and more will be displayed throughout both areas.

The RVS shop complies with the Scottish Grocers Federation guidelines and is separately from the other retail outlets within the hospital.

We will be introducing a new 2 week patient menu cycle at the end of February 2020. This will include greater variety of choices for patients to choose from and patients will be offered an additional hot lunch option to omelettes and baked potatoes.

All our meals have been assessed by NHS Lanarkshire’s Chief Dietician to ensure they offer appropriate nutritional intake and balance and comply with national guidelines.

The patient menus have also been considered to ensure better colour co-ordination for presentation purposes.

Patient catering within the hospital is from approved suppliers. In line with Food In Hospitals (revised March 2016) and local hospital policy, menus must provide no more than 6g/day of salt. In addition, we do not add seasoning at the preparation stage. Seasoning (salt and pepper) is provided for patients at Ward level to suit their own taste preferences.

In addition, we offer two Public Food Tasting sessions whereby member of the public can taste and comment on the patient menus. To date feedback has been positive.

Regards

William
