"Mentalization Based Treatment introduction group"

About: Community Forensic Services / Nottinghamshire MBT Service

(as a service user),

I have just completed the MBTi group at the Mandala Centre.  I found it easy to talk in the group, feeling I bonded with the group well.

I did find that I didn’t learn much I didn’t already know.  I also felt that there wasnt much support or guidance in the sessions, sometimes it felt that the sessions were too rushed/not enough time.  I think this is an area of change needed with the facilitators.  Sometimes I felt unheard or dismissed which was not helpful.  However, I found my 1:1 worker amazing.  I felt he would take responsibility for any mis-understandings and that he would take the time to actually listen and care which felt really nice.

I am not sure what to expect going into MBT Therapy as it sounds the same as this group (support), with only the smallest support and input from facilitators - I’m not sure how this is different?

Thank you for taking the time to give us this feedback. I am sorry you feel you didn’t learn a great deal from the sessions, it sounds like you may have explored some of the themes previously. I know the sessions are designed to reach a range of people with different expectations and previous experiences, so they can feel a little ‘all-purpose’ at times. I will take these comments about the group sessions back to the team for further discussion as we are always keen to review what we do and why. This feedback will help us inform/plan any future changes in the MBTi programme.

In my experience the MBTi group is quite different to the MBT therapy group, the focus being more on the events you/group members are experiencing day to day. Using the group to support you in holding a mentalizing stance to help you generate your own solutions, though exploring events/thoughts/feelings in more detail, rather than the more educational approach of the MBTi. The 1:1 sessions alongside the group are intended to support / help you make the most of the therapy. I hope that these concerns/expectations will be explored with you in your initial formulation sessions, if therapy is the next step for you.

It sounds like you were able to use the 1:1 sessions to start to explore some of the difficulties we often associate with loss of mentalizing (mis-understandings) and it sounds like this was a positive experience for you, I will make sure this feedback is shared with the clinician.

Best wishes, Louisa Hagan (Operational Team Leader)

Thank you for your response.

I have emailed through a complaint around how my response has been put on here though as my actual feedback is nothing like how it has been edited on here.

In my actual feedback I questioned how the main therapy group differs from a support group - not how it differs from the MBTi group - as we were told that "support groups" did not work however the facilitators would have very little input into these groups other than keeping us on topic. (A lot more has been changed other than this)

I have clarified this today with my 1-1 and was told that they have a reasonable amount of input and what they told our group should have at least been worded differently.

Thanks again.

I am sorry that you feel that your story has been edited to be little like your feedback. Our intention is to capture, as accurately as possible, the feedback given from the group into the Care Opinion format, I am sorry that you feel we didn't achieve this.

I have re-read the feedback you gave and the summary posted and I can see there are some differences but again the intention is to summarise as much as we can. I am more than happy to speak with you about this and see how we can adapt out processes in future, to learn from this and to avoid this happening again. Please feel free to contact me on 0115 8760162.

Best wishes, Louisa
