"Growth Scan- Antenatal services"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Community Maternity Care

(as the patient),

I attended my Health Centre for the first time after being referred by my midwife as she was concerned about the baby being bigger than average. The Sonographer was very abrupt and unprofessional which resulted in a very uncomfortable and negative experience. The sonographer questioned where I was in attendance as If could have waited till next Wed ( Pre arranged scan that had been booked regarding another concern) and said if it was up to them they wouldn’t have booked another scan.

I was only following the guidance and advice of the professionals who’s care and speciality I was under. Never would I question their recommendation, especially regarding my first babies health and development.

I lifted my top to assist the Sonographer to perform the ultrasound and was abruptly told to pull my top down and that they didn’t need to see my bra. I was highly embarrassed as this was accidental as I didn’t mean to lift my top that slight bit higher which caused offence to the sonographer.   I was told that the baby’s kidneys were ‘fine’ and that I would need to be tested for gestational diabetes due to the high plotting on the growth chart.

I came away from this appointment more anxious, thinking I had somehow caused these problems or complications for my baby and somehow offended this member of staff. I am very disappointed in the way I was treated as not only is it my first child and someone who suffers from anxiety and low mood but now have added concerns about the health and development of my baby.

I feel that a bit of compassion wouldn’t have went a miss and some professionalism after all this member of staff is in such an impressionable position and dealing with many vulnerable woman who are going through a life changing journey and are looking for support and reassurance as their future health and prospects are potentially in the hands and judgement of these experienced professionals.
