I was admitted to the Neuro D10 ward in January this year and the staff were absolutely amazing. I'd met quite a few of the staff on a previous stay on the ward last August. Many of the staff recognised me immediately and were really friendly to talk to.
I was on the ward for a total of 9 days and came across many of the staff on the ward and every single one of them was friendly, caring and listened to what I had to say.
An example would be: I was told I was having surgery in the morning, so had to be nil by mouth, the surgery was delayed so by the time I'd gone down for surgery I had missed breakfast and lunch. I was in recovery for several hours due to the pain I was in, so when I got back up to the ward the evening meals had already been eaten and after the anaesthetic, I didn't feel like eating.
Hours went by and it was now 10pm and my stomach was starting to feel hungry, I asked Alys, one of the nurses if there was any biscuits to eat and instead she offered to go and get me food from the kitchens. 10 minutes went by and Alys came back with a tray full of food for me. It was the first meal I'd eaten all day and it felt amazing. A plate of spaghetti hoops on toast with a tub full of cheese and 2 yogurt cartons on the side. Might not sound like much but for someone who'd not eaten anything other than a single biscuit in over 24 hours, it was delicious. Definitely the highlight of being in the hospital.
Even the smallest of gestures goes a long way for someone who had just come out of having brain surgery.
"The amazing neuro nurse team"
