"Hospital process for cancer patients attending A&E"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Monklands / Medical Oncology (Ward 16)

(as a carer),

Both my Mum and my Aunt are ill with cancer.

My Mum is terminally, lately they have both been sick and had been sent to the local hospital Monklands for further tests. when my Mum was diagnosed she was told to present herself as A&E and advise the situation at the checkin desk where she would be sent to another area away from the general public and sick people. Over the course of the past 10 months my mum has been in A&E on 4 occasions my aunt on 3 and they have both been sat waiting for hours at a time in a crowded waiting room with people being sick all around them, this is just not acceptable and could be fatal to both my loved ones.

Dear joanne 1204,

Thank you for taking the time to share the experience of your mum and aunt's visit to A&E. I am saddened to hear of the experience that they both have had as this is not what we would any patient attending A&E to have.

In relation to the advice given by staff that both your mum and aunt would be sent to another area away from the general public and sick people, unfortunately this is not always possible due to the nature of the department and availability of accommodation at the time. I can reassure that the staff take every opportunity to ensure that all patients are assessed and taken to the most appropriate area tailored to meet their needs and symptoms they present with.

Overall, I would welcome the opportunity to look into this in more detail to help ascertain further information and explain the support available at times when both your mum and aunt experience symptoms that require further assessment and care. I would be grateful if can call Patient Affairs on 01236 713065.

Please accept my sincere apologies and I hope that you call to discuss further as this is not the experience we want any patient or their family to experience during their care within NHS Lanarkshire.

Warmest Regards

Lynn
