"Chemotherapy"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Oncology

(as a service user),

I constantly wait at least 2 hrs for my chemo drugs to turn up for my treatment every time I go to hospital I have tried to express my concern and ask why this happens but every single time I ask i get a different story.

I also think most not all some are very good but a lot of the nurses in the headland unit need more training especially in compassion. Having cancer and having to have chemo is horrid . I would not  wish it on my worst enemy so please can we been shown some care and compassion it really matters.  Chemo can make you very upset angry vulnerable and sick and they don’t seem to get this.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience so that we can improve our service. I do apologise for your experience on the Headland Unit. I am sorry that you have had to wait on a number of occasions. There are multiple reasons as to why this is which is why you would have been given different explanations but I understand that this does not make it any easier for you.

The Unit is under increasing pressure due to the number of patients requiring treatment with the knock on effect in delays. We have employed a specific project manager to understand and help us address our current issues with the ultimate aim to ensure the patient pathway is a smooth as possible so please be assured we are actively addressing this.

I am very concerned with your experience of the nursing staff as this is not in line with the majority of experiences that are raised with me. My nurses are very experienced cancer nurses and I am disappointed that you have had this experience, I do apologise for this. I will ensure this is shared with the unit manager and nursing team as this is not what we attain to achieve.

If you would like to raise your concerns formally, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient and Family Experience Team by calling 01872 252793 or by emailing rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net
