"Access to a specialist"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I am writing this so that hopefully other people are not subjected to the same treatment I have been in future and want a resolution to my predicament.

I was referred to a gynaecologist in November after being diagnosed with subserosal uterine fibroid. It was found to be 10 cm in size. Since then to make matters worse my right kidney has also enlarged and is severely affecting me due to constant pressure and position of this fibroid.

I attended an appointment today after three months of waiting and numerous visits to the GP surgery and A&E in due to the severe pain I have been in - it turned out to be a complete waste of time, as the person I saw just told me that they did not specialise in my particular case and referred me on!

Please try to understand that I have been taking long term pain killers and lately been put on another one, which isn't helping with my lower abdominal and acute kidney pain.

I have been to A&E many times now and seen countless doctor's and am at my wits end that none of them between them knew who I needed to see. I am extremely disappointed in the care I have received to date and angry why I was referred to a consultant who had no speciality in dealing with this fibroid.

Today and the last 4 months have been an utter waste of my time, the NHS resources & the GP Surgery.

Lastly, to highlight my anguish today I was referred to another doctor, and  told I should've seen this doctor in the first place, as they specialise in my condition.

Now I don't know how long I will wait again as apparently it may take many months. I have 4 young children, along with them my whole family is suffering a lot because of a complete change in their lifestyle due to my condition.

Dear Responder

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on this website.

I am sorry to read of the pain that you are in. I understand that you are unhappy with the disappointing outcome of the appointment your GP made for you with our gynecologist.

I was also sorry to learn that after so many visits to healthcare professionals since November you have not been able to see the right person. Your case needs looking into by our dedicated PALS team who will be able to provide help and support and also escalate your concern to a complaint investigation if you would like to do so.

I would be very grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01296 316042 to talk about your specific experience, and to see how we may be able to assist you at this time.

Kind regards

Anthony Banton
