"Mistakes at reception"

About: Good Hope Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as a parent/guardian),

My son, 4yrs, had an appointment in the Ophthalmology Dept.

Upon arrival we spoke to a staff member at the reception desk who also checked our details regarding up to date GP details.

We sat down in the waiting area down the corridor...and waited, and waited, and waited.

There were no other people there apart from one boy waiting to be seen again as they put something in his eyes.

Eventually I asked someone in an office next to the waiting area whether they knew how long we'd have to wait.

They said they did not work with that department but would help me check with reception.

As it turned out, reception had not booked us in!

We then went in to see the Orthoptist straight away who apologized and said on the system we were a no-show, not booked in. The office is right next to the waiting area and I saw them popping in and out while waiting. Whilst I believe this is clearly reception's fault for wasting my time, they could have just checked outside if there's somebody waiting...!

When we left, I double-checked regarding updated GP/contact details....just as well as that had not been updated either. Less than impressed with my latest experience at Good Hope!

Dear Caris

Thank you very much for your comments regarding your recent experience in the Ophthalmology Department at Good Hope Hospital.

I am very sorry that you found the behaviour from the reception to be less than impressive and I would like to look into this matter further. To do this accurately, I would need some more information from you to identify you on our system and would like to ask you to contact the Patient Relations Team directly on 0121 424 0808 at your convenience or email: uhb-tr.Complaints-ConcernsandCompliments@nhs.net

I look forward to hearing from you and once again thank you for providing your comments, patient feedback and a positive patient experience is extremely important to us.

With kind regards

Patient Experience Team
