"Terrible service"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

Mother in law taken in to hospital, (hernia, twisted diagnosis), after a 5.5 hour wait at a local care center, for an ambulance. Went on to a ward (acute care) on Friday at 19:00 and at 05:00 am Sat was moved to another ward (15). At 07:00 Sunday am was again moved to another ward (day ward). Informed that she would require a scan and so would not be discharged on Sunday. On Monday she was discharged, by taxi, back home. No scan was carried out and no explanation given as to why no scan was done or the reason for moving a 75 year old OAP at such early times of the day, on three occasions over two days. Staff were excellent. System seems broken.

Thank you for this feedback about your mother in laws recent experience. I was sorry to read that she was discharged without a suitable explanation about her treatment and diagnosis. I hope she is feeling better now and I would urge her to seek immediate medical attention if she is still experiencing any pain.

I understand both her and your frustrations with being moved 3 times and at unsociable hours whilst in the hospital. I appreciate that moving between wards can be an anxious time and there should be clear communication with our patients and their relatives about these moves when a decision to transfer has been made.

At Victoria Hospital we have specialty and critical care wards where very ill patients receive intensive and specialised care, before moving to a general ward when their condition stabilises and improves. There are times when we may move a patient from one specialty ward to another; for example, from a medical specialty to a surgical specialty ward. We try to avoid these moves whenever possible, and should only move patients who have been assessed as stable and who are well enough to be moved.

If you would like to discuss these concerns in further detail please contact our Patient Relations Team on 01253 95 5588 / bfwh.patientrelations@nhs.net so that we can look into this further.

Many thanks

Eleanor
