We had been caring for dad at home and as much as we didn't want to admit this despite all the help from the carers, district nurses, MacMillan and Marie Curie it was taking its toll on mum and me.
The MacMillan nurse must have taken one look at us on a visit and suggested Kilbryde Hospice for my dad, just for a bit of respite for us all. We broke down in tears, but agreed it was probably for the best. She spoke to Dad and he said yes. After a call to the Hospice, they found us a bed and within an hour the Kilbryde Volunteer car arrived with Lisanne and John.
I had only visited it recently to see my aunt for 15 minutes so had no idea what it was really all about.
It is the most wonderful place and everyone is so upbeat and smiling and genuine. Almost immediately, my dad was less anxious and very content as he felt extremely safe in their hands and this made us feel better too.
Each and every member of the Kilbryde team play an important role in everything that is done at this Hospice. Doctors, nurses, auxiliary staff, chaplains cleaners, reception, office, canteen with volunteers from all walks of life. We are very humbled by it all.
My dad is still hanging on at the moment and I cannot thank everyone enough for the help and care which he is being given and for the welcome my family get each and every time we enter this building.
My daughter and I did the Kiltwalk last year for Maggie's and we are already up at 10 for this years' walk which we will do for the Hospice as we would love to give something back for all that has been done to make my dad's last weeks as comfortable as possible. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts.
"My dad..."
