"Ambulatory Care is Shocking!"

About: Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust

We attended the Ambulatory Care Unit at Pinderfields with my Father who had Lung Cancer and we were there for some tests after he had complications due to a suspected Infection, although the visiting Doctor had recommend he be checked for clotting also.

When we were admitted to the Ambulatory care the waiting room was full of patients so I asked if we could get a pager as I was reluctant for my Father to sit and risk further infection. The pager was given to me reluctantly and we sat upstairs in the Cafeteria, this was at 2:00pm with my Father very ill. No one had paged us so we went down at 4:30pm and they said he was next and they had tried the pager (A Likely Story). My father was seen by the nurses and an ECG, Bloods, Clotting and all manner of tests were carried out. We were then asked to wait in the waiting room which we did until 8:00pm which was now 6 hours after admission. We finally got to see a Doctor at 8:30pm who sent my Father away with a course of Antibiotics. Bearing in mind my Father had been sat in the hospital in a wheelchair, which I might add was very difficult to get hold of, for all this time. At no point was anyone unduly concerned about my Father and the Staff in Ambulatory care were less than sympathetic with most milling around the Reception Desk chatting. We took my Father home at 8:45pm and by 5:20am the next morning he had died, so his final evening of his life was spent in an inadequate hospital with uncaring staff doing tests that were obviously misguided. I would advise anyone in my position to think twice about taking anyone they care about to the Ambulatory care, because in my view it is an absolute shambles and void of any sympathetic and understanding staff. I felt my Father was patronised and shipped around as if he didn't matter.

Please may I begin by offering my sincere condolences at the loss of your father and I would like to apologise that you found the care given to your father at our Trust stressful and distressing.

I am really concerned with the issues you have raised and feel it is important that the Trust carry out an investigation. If you feel able to, as I appreciate what a difficult time this must be for you and your family, I would ask that you contact our PALS team who can advise on how to proceed with a formal complaint investigation. Their contact details are myh-tr.palsmidyorks@nhs.net or via telephone 01924 542972.

Kind regards

Clare Blackburn
