"When I broke my knee"

About: Lothian Community Services / Physio@Home Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I fell off a step ladder and knew immediately I had damaged something badly.

I broke my knee one Wednesday was operated on the Thursday and was discharged from hospital on the Monday. I was told I couldn't weight bear for 8 weeks.

The hospital was great and the NHS Service 2nd to none but when you're home it's really scary. I hadn't had an injury like this and I had people round me but still didn't know how scary it would be. I was in Edin Royal and the Orthopaedic Supported Discharge Team were sent out after my discharge and were amazing. Even with people round you you want the professionals to help. The team who are too numerous to mention were amazing.

They came every day. Checked I had access to food etc could wash ok and most importantly made sure I was doing the correct exercises. When they stopped just before my next Clinic visit I was worried. The feeling of vulnerability is huge if you're like me and weren't used to having an injury or being off work and entirely reliant on other people.

At the clinic in December I was told I could partially weight bear but I didn't really know what that meant. The next day I was put in the hands of the Community Physio in Edinburgh Lorna. She was amazing too. Explained exactly what I should be doing and how to do it. After 4 sessions with her I am able to climb down and up my stairs to my front door and am gaining in confidence everytime. Thanks Lorna!

The NHS is wonderful. You don't always hear about the services after a hospital discharge though. These too are amazing and I know although it might take some more time I will be able to walk unaided in a while. Thank you to the hospital and other services. You have certainly helped me!! Yours

Dear BrokenKnee, Edinburgh

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I will share your feedback with our team - they always appreciate it when patients provide feedback.

I am so glad that you felt supported by all staff to meet your goals at home.

It is reassuring to know that Lorna was able to explain things to you. I hope your confidence with walking and ability to do the stairs continues to improve.

Kind regards

Team Lead, Physio@Home
