I was admitted on 4th January 2020 to Alverstone Ward after a fall the night before, after a short time in urgent care & accident & emergency I was diagnosed with a broken hip.
They could not have been more kind to me, nothing was too much trouble. I was in a lot of pain & discomfort, & they were as gentle as possible & incredibly patient, not just with me but with the others on the ward, many of whom were suffering from dementia. The nurse who did the pain rounds went the extra mile to get me extra pain relief, which made a huge difference. The next day I was offered 2 choices, a whole hip replacement or a half one to replace the ball part of the joint. After talking to my family and praying I decided to go for the half one. A couple of hours later I was taken down to theatre for a nerve block to do my operation. I was soon back on the ward again receiving excellent aftercare. Everyone my family & I came into contact with was caring, compassionate & quick to care for every need. The following day the Physiotherapist came to get me out of bed & walk me about a bit with a zimmer frame, unfortunately my blood pressure dropped dramatically & I had to return to bed. The next day was much better & I was able to sit out for a few hours. My phsyotherapist was so caring & encouraging that after 6 days I was able to return home.
I really cannot praise the staff of Alverstone Ward enough, they were like angels. Please do pass on my thanks to each & every one of them. May God bless them richly for the wonderful work they do. Thankyou. Hazel Sherwood
