About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Firstly

The triage nurse was fine and very helpful

I would like to point out please that am 78,registered disabled, have chronic asthma, 3 stents and also a whole lot more.....

I had a bad gash on my left leg about 5" long it was bleeding badly as I take blood thinners among my many medications... and because of my bad back (laminectony) and arthritis in both hips it is not easy to bend down.. I.E socks, shoelaces are a big problem... When I came in I was walking with a stick slowly.... A friend had put some kitchen roll on my wound and taped it up with sellotape....!

The reason I am telling you this will be apparent to you in a moment!

When I was asked in by the nurse that attended me I was walking quite slowly, so this nurse could clearly see my difficulty and I was in pain from the wound.. It was bleeding a lot because my blood does not clot so easily because I take blood thinners !

I got there... was directed to sit down by the nurse who never said a single word and did not even make eye contact... Just very curt and uncaring... The nurse then asked me to roll my trouser leg up to reveal this temp bandage which was now bleeding and then told me to take my own bandage off ! which was very difficult for me for the reasons above.. I was struggling because of the strain of doing it coupled with fact that it had sellotape around it.... I asked the nurse if there was a pair of scissors and I was handed the scissors

And attempted to cut though this kitchen roll bandage with the sellotape around it, but could not do it and it was a strain for me to bend forward... Without a word the nurse took the scissors from me and easily cut it off... My problem is with the attitude and unsympathetic unhelpful way of this nurse!

I have never ever heard of an elderly disabled patient IN A/E being told to remove their own bandage!

.. when I told a friend and said what had happened, they could not believe it.... and said they had never ever heard of a patient having to remove their own bandage... I am entitled to a duty of care... from any NHS doctors, nurses etc...

After the nurse removed the bandage to reveal this wound... which was a large wound, bleeding and painful which I had done on the sharp corner on my car's driver's door... The

nurse cleaned me up still without a word to me... until I asked their name! They were not wearing a name badge... The nurse put about 10 sutures to hold the wound together.. Bound it up and gave me instructions of what to do...I have used the NHS all my life and I have nothing but praise for them... I understand totally the pressures that they come under and particularly in AE...

They do an amazing job and that is why I was shocked and upset by the uncaring way I was treated..... The treatment was good after me struggling to bend down... It was the attitude and demeanor that was not up to standard

Thank you for contacting us following your recent experience, I was sorry to learn that it did not go as we would hope for our patients. I will, of course, share this with the team but if you would like to discuss this further please contact our PALS team on 01273 664511 or at bsuh.pals@nhs.net.

With kind regards
