"Cardiac arrest and follow up"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Lincoln County Hospital / Cardiology

(as a service user),

One Saturday in December my husband found me lying on the kitchen floor unconscious and not breathing. We were about to go to the cinema.

He rang 999 and started CPR (120 kg on my chest!) for 25 mins until the ambulance arrived. He could not be more praiseworthy of the efficiency, quickness and kindness of the ambulance team.

I was whizzed off to ICU in Lincoln Hospital. I was in a coma for 3 and a half days. I cannot remember a thing. When I woke up the staff were amazing, kind, thoughtful, friendly, smiling, helpful and obviously happy that I was alive (photo taken!).

I was then transferred to the Johnston Cardio Wing where it was a bit more hectic but here again the staff were amazingly patient and professional , friendly and smiley without being condescending, despite the enormous pressures they were under. Thorough research was undertaken to understand why I had a cardiac arrest being 69, healthy (diet and mentally)... In the end on Xmas eve lunch time I was fixed with a defibrillator that seemed to match my condition and discharged that evening at 8pm, something I was very grateful for as it was “our turn” to have our 4 children and their family , one of them being a GP.

The next day a friend of ours who is a Doctor at Sheffield Hospital was with us. All in all I was in good hands should anything happen. I have slowly been pacing myself since and feel better and thankful to all these team and caring hands to be alive.

My only complaint is that my surgery did not want to give my husband a prescription for some of the medicines... nor Boots not having the go ahead by my surgery. I had a few pills left but NOT for all the medicines one of which was new issued by the hospital. I have applied to change Surgery.

I am eternally grateful to all the people who rallied around me to save my life, thank you!

Dear The French Otter,

Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words with me. I am so pleased to hear you are well on the road to recovery and had a lovely Christmas with your family. I'm delighted to hear that our ambulance crews were able to help you and your husband in your hour of need, and it sounds like he did an excellent job until our crew arrived.

If you are able, we would appreciate you sharing your comments with our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team, with as much detail as you can (e.g. date, time and location), so that they might identify the crew who cared for you and share your words with them. You may contact them via telephone on 0333 012 4216 or email emas.pals@nhs.net.

Best wishes,

Brian Jaffrey

Thank you for your feedback

I'm pleased you have made a good recovery.

We can talk to you about your ICU stay if you would like to know what happened while you were in a coma.

I have passed your message on to the ICU team
