I woke up on Christmas morning with an infected thumb. After contacting NHS24, I was advised to see my doctor without delay. I contacted my excellent GP, who prescribed antibiotics. As my GP was concerned about a build up of pus around the wound, a call was made to Gilbert Bain Hospital as it was felt it should be drained. An emergency appointment was made with a doctor at the hospital for the following day. I was very happy with the attention and care from my GP.
The following day, we drove the 33 miles to the Gilbert Bain Hospital to be told that the doctor that the appoinment had been made with was not on duty that day but I would be seen by the person on duty. I was surprised as we were present when the phonecall to the hospital was made. The nurses in A and E were, as always, caring, compassionate and reassuring while we waited over an hour to be seen.
Eventually, an individual walked past the waiting room. They then back tracked and marched towards us. Did not introduce themself so could have been anybody. I was too shocked and stunned to say anything. This person lifted my hand, prodded my thumb and said there was no need for it to be drained. I needed to keep it elevated; at which point my hand was flung onto my shoulder and the nurse was told to put on a sling. Then said 'Come back tomorrow' and walked out of the hospital. I was distressed at this point at what I felt was a lack of professionalism and respect towards a patient. Obviously, this person was in some rush to go. A kindly nurse gently placed a sling on my shoulder and gave us some useful advice.
We decided that we would not return the next day. The antibiotics seemed to be working their magic and I knew my GP would see me if I had worries about the infection.
I can only praise and admire my Dr and the lovely nurses who looked after me. Sadly, I feel I was treated like some inferior being by this individual. I feel I should have been seen in a consulting room not in a public place. I would like to think that hygiene methods would be in place but I saw no evidence of hand washing. Failed to make an introduction. All this amounts to very unprofessional behaviour in my opinion. I show the utmost respect for all people and I expect respect shown to me.
"A lack of professionalism and respect"
