I was recalled following a routine mammogram. I attended the clinic at Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow, where I underwent further investigation. A second mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy procedure was carried out by professional, compassionate individuals. Every member of the clinical staff that I encountered was so nice and friendly, and put me at ease. I was shocked when they broke the news to me that cancer was suspected, though wouldn't be proven until the biopsy results were known. The news was delivered in a caring fashion and I was told that Gartnavel Hospital would be informed that day and that I would receive an appointment letter to be seen there in approximately 2 weeks time. A letter duly arrived the next day, giving me an appointment at Gartnavel Hospital. This time period actually gave me time to adjust and get my head round the fact that I may have cancer. It was a useful adjustment period. I was subsequently given the results of the biopsy which showed that I did indeed have breast cancer, but that the screening process had done its job by catching it early enough to be treated successfully. I was then offered surgery the following week, prior to which I had a magnetic seed implant to locate the tumour accurately. Surgery followed swiftly, and the tumour was removed along with the sentinel lymph node. I would like to thank each and every person involved for their compassion, professionalism, and sheer kindness at every step of the way. I'll start with the radiographer at Sauchie mobile breast screening unit, then all of the clinical staff at Nelson Mandela Place, including Anne and Elspeth the nurse, the radiologist, then at Gartnavel, the female radiologist who skillfully inserted the magseed, together with the attendant nurse and radiographer, Mr Chris Wilson the surgeon, John the anaesthetist, Diane and her colleagues, nurses on the surgical ward 4A and everyone who was involved in treating me. A HUGE THANK YOU TO YOU ALL.
"Excellent care and subsequent treatment for breast cancer."
