"Absolutely terrible "

About: St James's University Hospital

I was advised to attend A+E via 111 to be seen within an hour. It took 90 mins for a HCA to do everyone’s observations in the waiting room. This included asking women to remove their scarves in a room of people , and left me in a very small vest as my jumper was too thick. No preservation of dignity. As medical professionals, me and my husband are familiar with underfunding and staff shortages but it was shocking. Firstly, No pain relief . I had abnormal observations and at no point did they attempt to bring my temperature down or be proactive in investigating tachycardia. They were bringing people in who were laughing, joking, clearly not critically unwell before people that were clearly very unwell (vomitting , one man collapsed and was just left there!) . They clearly prioritise who is waiting the longest but this is not effective triage. After asking for some Investigations I was brought round and left in a small room (3 hours in still no pain relief) asked to remove my top for an ECG - HCA left the curtain open so I was stood topless then ... never came back to do the ECG. I had to remind them .

A+E consultant so condescending to patients especially old people and speaking so loudly Everyone knew all about the old mans personal issues with his genitals and another young mans mental health issues.

Nurses sat at the desk and were speaking very loudly about patients too, one referred to an old man as a “pain” “doing her head in” just utterly unbelievable.

Finally, in our little room there was a vomit bowl on the floor full of somebody else’s bloody sputum. I asked for it to be moved - never happened and I just sat opposite the Hca who was sat at a computer playing Christmas songs ? In the end I put gloves on and moved it myself.

No compassion, poor triaging system, absolutely not maintaining dignity, not fit for purpose
