About: Bernays & Whitehouse Medical Partnership

I have had Diabetes Type 2 for over 10 years. I tried to manage it through my diet following the "Eat Well" diet published by Diabetes UK. I took my daily Metphormin tablets as prescribed. Each year by blood sugar level increased and my weight steadily increased.

Three years ago, I read Dr Michael Mosely's book the "Eight Week Blood Sugar Diet". I thought I had found the answer. I lost weight and brought my blood sugar levels down to below the level which determines you are diabetic. 2 years later having followed the same "Eat Well" regime as recommended by Diabetes UK, I had put back on weight and my blood sugar levels rose alarmingly.

I was asked if I would join a diabetic group at Grove Surgery and every Wednesday night I met with several people with diabetes to discuss with the Diabetic Nurse our individual cases and the latest learnings on the subject. 8 weeks later I am back down to a prediabetic level and have lost over a stone in weight. The diabetic nurse is very motivational and with her help I now believe I can beat diabetes. In my case I think I have found the poison which has been slowly killing me. The Diabetes UK "Eat Well" diet prescribes about 40% of each meal should be carbohydrates which I think is at the centre of my history/problems over the last 10+ years.

In the last 8 weeks I have been following a low carbohydrate eating plan - no potatoes, rice, bread or pasta. With the help of my family and my diabetic nurse, I believe I am well on the way to reversing my diabetes. I look forward in 6 months time to sitting with my doctor to discuss coming off my medications.

I now know and have proven what is good for me and what is bad for me. I think all of us have individual genetic make ups and so what is right for one is not necessarily right for all. With the help of Grove Surgery and in particular the Diabetic Nurse, I think I am now on the right path!
