"Husband's Wrist/Thumb/Hand Injury"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Trauma and Orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My husband recently fell on the ice, and that night we took him to A&E. Minor injuries informed us it was soft tissue damage and said we could leave. He received a call the next day, advising him to return as he had broken bones in his wrist. He attended the hospital the same day and was fitted with a splint. After this he was issued with an appointment for the following week to consult with an orthopaedic doctor. Upon arrival, he was sent to minor injuries, then told he was in the wrong place. He had an x-ray done and told the break was near his thumb. There was a small delay in his appointment, normal for such a busy place, and then seen by a Doctor. This Dr told him he had broken a bone in his hand. They seemed very dismissive of him, as if he was wasting their time. Naturally, he returns home very frustrated as they organised the appointments for him to go in, he didn't request this! In fact, he was very embarrassed about the whole ordeal and didn't want to make a fuss. We are now very confused, is his wrist, thumb or hand broken? Extremely disappointed in the service and frankly, it's a complete joke. I would love someone to email us and tell us what is actually wrong as a potential error in his treatment could lead to further damage.

Dear KatSaysMieow,

Thank you very much for sharing this feedback with us following your husband's recent experiences at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh fallowing his fall. I was very sorry to read what has been happening and it sounds as though this has been a very difficult and frustrating time.

To allow us to look into this I wonder if l can please ask that your husband contacts the Patient Experience Team as they will need some further information from him to allow them to look into this and try to help.

The team can be contacted by:

Email: feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk

Telephone: 0131 536 3370

The office will be closed on the public holidays but the team will be back on Friday 27 Dec,

I do hope that you are all able to enjoy the festive holidays and once again please can l apologise for his experiences.

With best wishes

Jeannette
