"We did not feel alone and there was always someone to talk to"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

On Monday 16th December I had a growth scan and found out that our baby had no heartbeat. I had miscarried around 1-2 weeks before. My partner and I were both heartbroken but the staff were amazing with us and helped us throughout the process.

The staff in triage were amazing and comforted us after hearing about our loss. Triage staff took the time to explain exactly what would happen over the coming days.

I was due to go back in on Wednesday 18th December to start taking tablets to start the labour process. Before my appt time of 10am I had heavy clotting and bleeding. I called triage who called an ambulance to get me to the hospital ASAP.  The service received from both ambulance crew members was great. They took us to the labour ward at Wishaw General where they were expecting us. The lady who traveled in the back of the ambulance with me made myself and my partner feel relaxed and made us comfortable until we arrived at the hospital.

Lauretta and Vicki were waiting on us arriving in the labour ward where they were with both myself and my partner throughout the day and took the time to explain everything to us, check on us and bring us anything at all that we needed. Both of them along with the doctors and trainee staff were very patient and always kept us updated on the situation.  I felt very calm under the circumstances as they were all very caring. Although this was devastating for my family and I, the team of staff working with us made it much easier as they made us feel very relaxed.

Lauretta and Vicki brought our baby in for us to see and we were given all the time we needed. We did not feel alone and there was always someone to talk to. We received a beautiful memory box and pictures of our baby so we can treasure these.

Lauretta then moved us to the bereavement room, Ohana Room, which is a lovely room for those who have had a loss. It feels more like home than a hospital. This made us feel more comfortable and the staff were on call for us as and when required.

Both women who came round offering us lunch and dinner were so nice to us and made sure that we had had something to eat. Always ensuring we had something to eat or drink as we had no breakfast due to the time we called initially with my symptoms.

The nurses from nightshift and then onto morning staff looked after both myself and my parter overnight, again making us feel like we had someone to talk to and answer any questions we had.

The staff were amazing with us and I will never forget the care we received. Not only as a patient but caring for my family during this difficult time. I can’t thank them all enough.

Dear KJ 18-12-19,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience and feedback on CareOpinion. Firstly, please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss. I cannot imagine what you and your partner have been, and are going through just now but to hear about the support and care that you have been shown over the past few days is warming.

Sometimes we do not need to understand what people are going through but just understand that they need support and it sounds like this has been the case here.

I wish you and your partner all the very best in the future and thank you again for taking the time to share this.

Kind Regards

Alan
