I had an abdominal scan and transvaginal scan first. The staff present were very detached and showed absolutely no compassion or empathy. The whole atmosphere was very clinical and consequently very traumatic.
My consultation with the consultant was very quick and efficient, although equally distressing as they had failed to take into account that my GP’s surgery had referred me partly because they had been unable to conduct an internal examination with a speculum. However, the nurses and consultant took my distress into account and I was enabled by them to refuse the use of the speculum. The nurses present were particularly empathetic which offered much needed comfort.
Fortunately the outcome of my visit was positive in that I was discharged back into the care of my GP and the consultant explained what the GP should be offering. I was also extremely grateful to have been seen so quickly.
"Variable degrees of empathy"
