After visiting my wife in this unit for approx. 6 weeks I would like to thank the nurses and medical staff for the exceptional work they do under very difficult circumstances. Patients in this ward all suffer from some form of brain damage and require a lot of attention in eating, toilet, medication, emotional issues and general insecurity.
Problems of patients wandering lost and patients feeling aggressive have been seen during my visits and these require caring and dedicated nursing which is seen in abundance in ward 11.
Unfortunately, although the medical staff are extremely caring the management of the hospital seem to be totally unaware of the problems I feel they are creating.
In my opinion, the general policy of open visiting does not work in this ward not only for patients but also staff and even relatives. Having managed large establishments in three continents I feel qualified to suggest that management in Wishaw need to spend time in this ward, not just a passing visit and correct the obvious problems I feel they have created.
To add to the opinion that this management seem out of touch with the requirements they have created a Discharge Lounge within ward 11 where all wards discharge creating a further flow in an area that requires silence to allow people to rest and allow their brains to heal.
This ward is an exception to the norm and I feel it MUST be managed as such. My wife was moved 5 times during her stay and being in a confused state this is unacceptable especially the move to ward 16 the night before she left. Although I received an apology from a management rep. and understand the problems which created the moves I firmly believe that this is the role of management to solve these problems.
Creating problems and not solving obvious shortcomings suggest that this management should have a serious look at themselves before someone else does.
