"Immediately apparent that there were not enough staff"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Medicine

(as a service user),

I was very ill earlier this year and was admitted to this hospital on a Saturday evening. It was immediately apparent that there were not enough staff and the ones there were seriously stretched. When I was eventually given a bed in the single rooms, I found it was very difficult to find staff to respond to buzzers. Again, this was due to staffing, Most on duty were health care workers and apparently not qualified to respond to a number of requests such as changes to drips or for top-up medications.   I was very distressed for much of the time and, as I was nearly 80 miles from home, it was difficult to manage day to day. Not an experience I’d be willing to repeat.

Dear Jjeeaann,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on what has obviously been a very upsetting experience. It is particularly difficult when you are so far away from home. Please accept our unreserved apologies for the distressing time you have experienced at DGRI, this is not the standard of care that we wish to be delivering to our patients, Please accept my assurance that we are working hard as a team to make meaningful and sustainable improvements to our patient care. If you feel that you would be able to discuss this matter further, I would very much welcome and encourage you to get in touch with me directly at the Patient Experience Team either by email or by telephone. I would like to thank you again for taking the time to share your experience, I will be sharing this with the areas concerned in order to promote learning and improvement for our future patients, hearing our patient stories first hand is an extremely powerful learning tool, and your feedback will be invaluable. I hope that you are feeling better and are on the mend. Please accept my thanks and appreciation for taking the time to share your story.

Kind regards

Alexis Brain
