"Quality of service"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

(as a service user),

Ambulance called for my elderly uncle at 13.00aprox. ambulance did not arrive till 20.45.  It felt like the Ambulance staff were more concerned about him not having community alarm food and water ( which he had plenty to drink and eat that day) than his infection.  He had a procedure in hospital 6 days before.

He was not allowed to take his walking stick with him which upset him.

Next day I was called as I am next of kin to get there ASAP as he was not so good . Was asked if he had a fall as the medication he was on could lead to a brain bleed. He was given morphine due to pain in abdomen, he had a chest infection and fluid on the lung and his respiratory was not so good.when I arrived at hospital fearing the worst the dr said there was no brain bleed .he had an infection of which they were unsure of what it was. I asked if it was sepsis. The dr became flustered and evasive and said they were not sure. He has the symptoms.

My uncle was getting a chest drain procedure to which I went to the public toilet in the hosp. And all I can say is one word filthy and it stank of urine. I chose to use another toilet in another area. This was a bit better but not by much. Absolutely filthy and a chemical sanitiser was left on shelf unattended next to the filthy sinks was a joke as

A : it clearly had not been used (I am a professional cleaner to trade)  and know it cleans anything

And B: more importantly Health and safety rules state that ALL chemicals need to be locked in a safe cupboard.

Clearly breaching the health and safety code of practice

I then decided to go for a coffee in the staff/ public canteen and low and behold more chemicals left on a table unattended. Health and safety issue again.

C” mon NHS the docs an nurses do an amazing job to which the system is clearly letting them down.

Dear "High standard"

I am extremely disappointed that you found the cleanliness of the toilets within Ninewells Hospital to be below the standards I would expect in NHS Tayside. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I would wish to assure you that action has been taken to determine why this was the case and ensure it does not happen again. I would be happy to discuss this further with you and, should you wish to do so, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01382 660111 Ext 35377.

Kind regards

Pauline Matthews

Hi Pauline,

Thanks for your response. The standard was well below par, I wished I had a red scouring pad in my bag as I would have demonstrated with the Titan how clean a sink could be! Putting the cleanliness aside ...the chemicals being left unattended was worse, that could have been dangerous if a child was around. I now hope the staff Get the training they urgently need.
