"Nervous patient, wonderful staff!"

About: Homerton University Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I attended Day Surgery for a hysteroscopy and polypectomy under general anaesthetic.

The care I received was exemplary, and I was hugely impressed by the staff and most aspects of the experience (which I must admit I had been absolutely dreading). I suffer with bad hospital anxiety and I arrived absolutely terrified, thinking I would not be able to go through with the procedure.

The nurses immediately knew I was distressed even though I hadn't told anyone, and did an amazing job of putting me at ease as soon as I arrived on the ward. The anaesthetist and the rest of his team were also extremely reassuring, compassionate and patient - explaining everything calmly and somehow convincing me not to do a runner before the op.

The aftercare was also outstanding: staff were very attentive and unlike what I've experienced at other day case units I did not feel under undue pressure to 'get back on my feet' immediately after the procedure, and was given enough time and space to recover at my own pace. The ward was clean, comfortable and not too busy, and I was provided with endless cups of tea!

I was very grateful to be able to have this procedure (which I've heard can be very painful) under GA, and felt well enough to go home after a couple of hours, with only minimal discomfort. I would definitely recommend Homerton to anyone else needing day surgery, and although I didn't see my consultant on the day of the op, all of those I spoke to were helpful and pleasant, and I felt included in decisions.
