"beacon of light"

About: Kilbryde Hospice / Counselling

(as the patient),

I first attended Kilbryde Hospice  around 5 years ago when I felt my world was crashing down round about me after my Stage 3 Cancer Diagnosis. It started with a meeting with the head nurse who was fantastic and very informative , I then attended the day services which again was amazing and very good to have that help and support and also having people around dealing with the same issue. Fast forward 5 years and 4 major operations and Chemotherapy to Summer 2019 my cancers started to grow and spread. So the first thought was I need help as I cant go through this again.

So after consultations with Oncology and doctors I was in a very dark place thinking why me, what did I do to deserve this, this isn't fair.  My life was spinning out of control and felt I had no where to turn I didn't want my wife and family upset and having to go through this again. I spoke to my GP who sent a referral to the Hospice regarding there help and support and also there Counselling Services. I was not keen at first as I didn't want to admit how I felt and that I wasn't in control. I blamed myself for the Cancer and that I had brought it on myself. After being reluctant I accepted the help and I am so glad I did as the service was amazing and my counsellor was second to none. He listened to how I was feeling and how the whole situation was making me feel. He helped me understand that it wasn't my fault and it could happen to anyone and its just pot luck, the more sessions I had the better I felt and more positive I was, I looked forward to each weekly session to tell him how I had been that week and that things where getting better, he also helped me open up to my wife and family about how I was feeling which made things so much better. Both he and the service have helped me come to terms with what I have been through and still going through. Just because the diagnosis wasn't what was expected doesn't mean everything has to stop and there is no point on fighting on, there is always a reason to carry on and keep fighting, always fight for another day.  There is no reason why anyone should have to go through this on there own and Kilbryde Hospice is a beacon of light if you ask me and I cant thank my counsellor and all the other staff enough for all there help and support .

Thanks for Everything

Dear G Buddha

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your story on Care Opinion. As Clinical Services Manager at Kilbryde Hospice it is reassuring to hear that you have been supported at varying stages of your illness. It is often misunderstood that hospice care is only for people at the the very end of life.

You mention that you felt "out of control" and had " nowhere to turn". I am delighted that your GP referred you back to us for a block of counselling. It sounds as though one of our wonderful counsellors was enough to turn things around for you and became your "beacon of light.

In addition to giving Kilbryde Hospice such lovely feedback, your post on Care Opinion will also help others in a similar situation to you. They may be able to see that there is help despite progression of their illness by reading of your experience.

G Buddha I will pass your very positive feedback onto our counselling team and all the staff and volunteers who work behind the scenes to ensure we can continue to support you and those close to you.

Take care of yourself

Kind regards

Margaret Mary Cowan
