"A dangerous and prejudiced system"

About: Beacon Medical Group

I have always had a high regard for Highland medical practice, their practitioners and staff in Ivybridge. Unfortunately since they have partnered with Beacon group i can't tell you what a unperson-centred establishment they have become through their streamlining online services. I'm pretty average when it comes to using computers, but i do use them everyday at work and converse with people in challenging situations in the health care system. But my experience of the most simple operation of booking an appointment for my son on the phone and online with beacon has to be one of the most stressful, time consuming exercises of late. I decided to take time out of work this am to just go see someone at the surgery who might help and to enquire about some medication changes. The lady explained that she didn't deal with medication nor book appointments and this was all done online. When i explained the difficulties i was having with this, I was faced with someone so unsympathetic and sarcastic i felt quite stunned. I can't tell you how helpless and frustrating this was! I don't know how this system is supposed to support those in the community who are vulnerable, elderly, have special needs, but this is a shameful and quite frankly a dangerous system. I have never left a GP surgery feeling quite so helpless and upset. BTW still no appointment booked for my child and no guarantee of medication change updated. What happened to just having a conversation? The saddest thing is this terrible system is masking the wonderful standard of service the doctors do at that surgery.

We are very sorry to hear that this has been your experience and we will look into the response you received. We will also call you.

Please be assured that the online GP consultation service has been developed by NHS GPs and patient safety is foremost in its design.

We also understand that using the Internet is not for everyone, which is why there are three options for those without Internet access to benefit from an online GP consultation. They can ask someone you trust (such as a family member, friend or carer) to complete the online GP consultation with them; they can visit the surgery where there are computer tablets freely available and connected to the online GP consultation system, or; they can call the surgery where one of our Care Navigators will take them through the process. Online GP consultations receive a response within 24 hours, and are seen by a patient’s own GP. The GP will ring, email or text (depending on preference) if they feel they need to contact the patient, or organise an appointment (usually on the same day) if they think it is necessary.

Online GP consultations are simply another way for patients to interact with their GP and care teams. Patients can still contact us by phone and, because more people are using the online service, the wait for an answer is shorter.
