"Uncomfortable procedure with no explanations"

About: Borders General Hospital

(as a service user),

I attended for a test and the practitioner questioned why I was there and stated that my last ECG would indicate that this test was unnecessary. I felt like I was wasting his time although I did not refer myself to the department and I feel he should have directed his opinion to the referrer rather than the patient.

The practitioner did not introduce themselves or inform me of how the procedure would be undertaken. As a female I felt very uncomfortable with a male practitioner undertaking a procedure that required me to  undress to the waist and lie on a bed with him pushed against me. I feel the practitioner could have worked harder to inform me about what was going to happen and be more mindful of how a woman might feel in this situation.

After this an ECG was performed by another member of staff, who was kind and considerate and informed me about what they were doing. This was a much more positive experience.

Dear Munro11

I am very sorry to hear of your experience when attending the Borders General Hospital for a procedure. I would not expect staff to question patients on why they have attended for a procedure given that this decision had been made by the referrer. I also expect all staff to introduce themselves to patients and explain a procedure to them beforehand to ensure they are aware of what is going to happen. I can therefore only apologise that this was your experience.

I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience with you in more detail in order for me to fully address your concerns. Can you please contact me on (01896) 827202 or via email on karen.maitland@borders.scot.nhs.uk

Regards,

Karen
