"Students listening had detrimental effect"

About: Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

(as a service user),

The appointment was in October and months before. I was disturbed to see a student listening intently at my psychiatrists door. I was in the waiting room. They seemed to be able to hear what was being said and i think this tipped the balance and altered thing for the patient.  It was disturbing to me. When it was my next appointment in October I wanted to say no to the students being involved in my appointment but my instincts told me I had to let them be there. It was a yukky appointment because the Psychiatrist asked me quick fire about rape. I have just got round to sharing this view. How many paranoid schizophrenic people are getting better? I don't think psychiatric staff should be paid if they cant help us.

Dear Mystys Sister,

Firstly, please accept our apologies for the length of time it has taken for us to respond to your review.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience at your last appointment. Whilst it is important for students to have the opportunity to observe consultations as part of their learning, this should always be with the knowledge and consent of the service user.

We will contact all our lead consultants to ask them to remind our doctors that they need to check if service users are happy for students to be included in appointments.

I am sorry that you also found your appointment with your psychiatrist unhelpful. If you would like us to look into this further for you, please contact our Customer Care Team at customercare@gmmh.nhs.uk or telephone us on 0161 358 0600 or for free on 0800 587 4793.
