From pre assessment clinic through to discharge the care I have received has been exemplary. The presentation given to those of us pending surgery at pre assessment was informative and useful. It was delivered professionally by the HCA in such away that all those present easily understood it and although aimed at those with limited or no-healthcare background, for me as a healthcare professional, I felt it was equally informative and inclusive. All investigations were fully explained and comprehensive history taken. The opportunity to discuss with the physiotherapist home circumstances also shows there was consideration of discharge planning even at that early stage. I would also commend the staff in pre-assessment on the application of standard precautions, equipment cleaned between each patient, excellent hand hygiene, compliance with uniform policy and use of personal protective equipment.
There was a slight glitch with surgery date beyond any ones control, thank you to Marjory for helping resolve. Surgery wait was marginally over the 12 weeks but barely.
Admitted to Ward 10 and as with pre-assessment my experience of the care provided was exemplary. Staff at all levels really do have at the centre of their practice an aim of providing a positive patient experience. Admission and preparation for theatre was well done and plenty opportunities for questions and reassurance. Dignity was maintained and the courtesy to all patients was evident in every communication. Visited by surgeon, and his assistant as well as anaesthetist preop. As per previous comment the patient centred approach continued into my surgical admission, my informed decision to decline spinal was respected. Post op care was well-done, regular observations and checks on pain levels made sure I had opportunity to maintain good analgesic cover. Staff were considerate and patient as I gradually became self-caring again. Infection control practices were to a high standard and equipment and environment were maintained and decontaminated when I regretfully did not contain the contents of my stomach! My apologies to staff for that episode of vomiting. Tracey you really do make the best toast (gluten free)!
The hospital catering was also to a good standard.
Physiotherapists were reassuring and made sure I had mastered the art of stairs and walking sticks before being discharged and had clearly made comprehensive notes for discharge as was noted at my first OPD appt. If there were an area for improvement then it would be the pharmacy discharge medications. There was a significant delay of several hours after being released before medications are received to allow me to go home.
All in all a very positive experience and as I remain under the care of Mr Walmsley for other orthopaedic management I am totally reassured and confident I am receiving the best standard of care possible.
"Totally reassured and confident"
