"Bowel cancer screening"

About: Victoria Hospital / Colorectal Unit Victoria Hospital / Pre-assessment

(as a service user),

@I did my bowel cancer screening and it came back positive, I was very scared that I had bowel cancer , thought of an operation and chemo etc seemed very scary  ,your mind works overtime ! The initial outpatient appointment was very quick within a week I had seen Pamela who explained the procedure , went through my medical history and gave me my colonoscopy date which again was very quick (just over a week) Pamela was very nice and made me feel a little easier about what was going to happen and what ever followed so thank you for that .

On the morning of my colonoscopy examination I have to say I was welcomed very nicely by a nurse called Emma , she showed me to the room to get changed and came back to help me , I was then asked to wait in the sitting room which had a tv , there were other people waiting so it was nice to talk and take your mind of the event ! A nurse called jean came and took me to fill in a medical sheet and fit the cannula, she was very gently spoken and very gentle fitting the cannula , she had a very calming persona, that helped me a lot. Thanks jean.

I was then asked to wait again in the sitting room until I was taken for my colonoscopy which wasn’t to long , the nurses were all pleasant , got me settled then the doctor came and asked me a few questions before they began , I was then given my sedation which was my Choice , the overall procedure wasn’t as bad as I thought I think the pre drink from the day before was !!

After it was done I was wheeled back to the recovery ward where the nurses jean , Emma and some others were very attentive, I had coffee and toast told just to rest for a bit and I could go home , I was given my colonoscopy report and a after care plan for when you got home .

Once my lift arrived I was able too leave an hour after my procedure .i would just like to say thank you to all at the staff on that day for making me feel comfortable, calmer , and a well looked after , you should be proud of yourselfs , thank you.

Dear Fantastic Care

Thank you for posting your feedback on Care Opinion.

What you describe is a common reaction to a positive bowel screening test, it is scary and natural to worry and think the worst. I am glad that you were seen quickly by our Bowel Screening nurses and that Pamela was able to put your mind at ease a bit.

It was lovely to read that the staff who looked after you on the day were also able to give you the support and reassurance that you needed and that you felt well looked after.

I will pass on your post to Pamela, Emma and Jean as well as the bowel screening team and the endoscopy team who looked after you on the day. I am sure your kind comments will make their day.

I am grateful that you have taken the time to post. It is so important that people do their bowel cancer screening test and your positive experience may encourage others to do so.

I hope that you have recovered well

Kind regards

Gill
