"Unsafe Staffing Levels"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

(as a relative),

This particular experience is relating to Roskear Ward but I have had the same experience at other departments at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

The health care assistants deserve a medal for the amount that is put on them from poor management. They are always so friendly and couldn't do enough for my brother in law. The duties these hcas take on due to unsafe nursing levels are absolutely crazy and I feel deeply for them. Nurses are few and far between and you don't see them very often. Hca's do the majority of the running around, answering call bells etc. I just really wanted to express my concern for the dangerous environment this puts the patients in and would love for it to change - the only way this will happen is if EVERYONE speaks up about their experience as I hear from many people that they have witnessed the same throughout the trust. Look after your staff and look after your patients.

Dear Hml239,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding. I was saddened to see that although you found the Health Care Assistants to be very efficient, you felt that the Nursing staff were few and far between. It is very worrying to read that there may be unsafe staffing levels on Roskear Ward and in other departments you have visited.

To this end, I have shared your feedback with the Matron of Roskear but if you would like to raise your concerns formally, please contact our Patient and Family Experience Complaints team by calling 01872 252793 or emailing rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net.

Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Best wishes,

Jess
