"Omelet you could use as a football"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Diabetes care (Ward 10)

(as the patient),

I have seen several complaints about the food and its always the same answer with no improvement. I was a patient a few years ago the breakfast was the same every day and the lunch was omelet you could use as a football, half a baked potato with dried up salad are a very plain sandwhich. Dinner was not nice and that's me been polite for example I was offered one night macaroni cheese with potatoes and cabbage. I was in this year and was offered the exact same food. Whoever has the contract for the food I feel it is not fit for purpose. They may supply what patients require but if you don't want the food you won't eat the food. I was lucky I had a family who brought me food in, as a diabetic it was important that I ate. Every patient I encountered complained about the food. Maybe you are locked into a contract, I can only hope it does not last much longer for the sake of future patients.

Dear Diabetic patient

We apologise that you felt that the Catering service fell below the high standards expected.

Patient menus are currently under review and we propose to introduce a new menu once approval has been provided. This will include greater variety at lunchtime.

Nursing staff advise and assist patients to make menu choices on the ward with Nursing staff collecting patient food choices from the Hostess and serving to each patient.

All our meals have been assessed by NHS Lanarkshire’s Chief Dietician to ensure they offer appropriate nutritional intake and balance and comply with national guidelines.

Regards

William
