"System isn’t working"

About: Vine Medical Group

I have been a patient since moving to the area several years ago. I am generally a fit and healthy person and so initially my only contact with the practice was for smear tests and I never required much in the way of other care. In the first 5 years I did see one female Dr with regards to severe mood swings which she wanted to prescribe antidepressants- which I refused. My second visit for a smear test (which was not easy to book and I had to do so weeks in the future) a very rude nurse made a comment to me with regards to fertility which was really upsetting and she booked me an appointment with a Dr the next day. I saw the Dr who was friendly and said the comment wasn’t very fair. She requested blood tests and a pelvic ultrasound. I went to see a nurse who took blood. I heard nothing. I chased. Eventually told I hadn’t been tested correctly and to book more blood tests. I chased various times. I called for blood tests results and was told these couldn’t be given without the results of the ultrasound. I try to find out how to get the ultrasound booked as we are now months down the line. I am told to collect a form. The form is dated January when I was the dr, it is now May. I call the number on the form and book ultrasound. I take time off work to have the scan and am told the form isn’t right. I am beside myself by this point, my husband calls the surgery and complains. We are given the phone number to book a scan at QA. I call QA and have to wait for a letter. I eventually get the scan in July. I then get a text message from the GP practice saying ‘everything is normal’. Now, the text message would be helpful if it weren’t for the fact I had spent 6 months worrying- caused by a comment made by someone at the practice.

I subsequently fell pregnant and the care I received was nothing short of miraculous compared to the 6 months I had just endured. I sadly miscarried at around 10 weeks. I called my gp practice to let them know and wasn’t offered an appointment or any care whatsoever. I was experiencing severe pain so I called my GP practice for same day care but was told that was full- even though I explained I had recently miscarried- no appointments call again at 2:30. I cannot wait 5+ hours in this pain so I n the end I drove myself to st Mary’s. I was seen in minutes and they referred me to QA as I had a serious infection. They scolded me for driving in the state I was in. I don’t usually write reviews but I find the care I have received is so poor I feel compelled to. The only thing my Drs has on record about me was that they thought I was depressed and yet they put me though months of stress and waiting for no reason and then dismissed me when I had experienced a terrible loss. The call handlers are so busy trying to screen you they are impersonal and not very kind. The system is not working as the same day vs. routine appointments situation is ridiculous. I urge the practice to reconsider their booking system and training.

I am very sorry to read of the journey and experience you have faced when seeking care from us. We need to fully investigate each stage and would be very appreciative if you would contact Dr Bowerman, who leads on clinical complaints on our behalf. As you comment is anonymous we are unable to track back and see exactly where our care has fallen short. I am pleased that this type of feedback is highly unusual, but enforces the need for us to understand and learn from your experience.
