I had a recent stay in Meavy after a complex ovarian cyst removal. I originally didn't expect to be staying in, but spent two nights there. The nurses and support staff were lovely. I had a bad first night and rang the bell a lot, I was stressed, anxious and confused (due to the operation effects and medication) but the nurses came and helped me out. The second day was better and everyone who came to give me injections, medicine, check obs, water, tea and anything else couldn't have been nicer! Even with all the tubes and bags I still felt my dignity was being respected by everyone. I know that hospitals are busy places and staff are under a lot of pressure, but I felt I was the only person there as everyone was 100%committed to my best interests! It was my first time in hospital and I had a big operation, and couldn't have asked for better treatment. I met so many lovely people, and would love to thank certain people individually, but am terrible with names, so thanks to everyone I met. On admission day, there was some confusion, as I had been told at the pre op, I was a day patient, so was a bit concerned when I found out I would be staying in! But the people I spoke to put my mind at rest, all from the doctor, to the lovely lady who walked with me to the theatre.
I like how the first question is how likely you would be to recommend to a friend! I'm not sure I would ever recommend a hospital stay to a friend, but if it has to be done, then everyone involved in Gyno and at Meavy are lovely.
If I have a recommendation, is preparation for life after hospital. There is a lot of information for preparing for your operation, for example, what to eat (or not), wear, and bring. but nothing for after. I was told certain things and a lot of it is common sense (rest, expected pain, no lifting etc) but wasn't really prepared for the emotional side. Though this has no bearing on my treatment during my time time there.
