"Speech and Language Therapy"

About: North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Speech & Language Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was diagnosed with Non Verbal ASD & SPD in April this year and while it was a lot to process the most difficult thing to take in was the fact that he couldn't speak and had no understanding. After being assessed and given a SALT we were then put forward for the Hanen More Than Words program. While we are only on week 3 using the steps that i had learned my son said 'see saw' AND knew the correct context of the word. This is massive for our family. It was a special day in our house to hear him speak for the first time.  Not only that but because of his diagnosis he doesn't interact much at all and is very dismissive.  I now know the correct steps to use to they and let him let me in.

However the only problem is there is not many SALT in our area at all. There are 4/5 spread all throughout which is a real shame. The workers themselves give up a lot of their own time too and invest themselves in your child/family to the point that every milestone your child makes is just as important to them and to know that you are doing the right steps and being guided through is really appreciated. I only wish they had more funding so that you didn't have to wait 2+years to be assessed.

Dear Kez88

Thank you for taking the time to post these comments. It is great to hear the difference that speech and language therapy has made for you and your family. I’ll make sure the team see your positive feedback.

I’m sorry you had to wait so long for input. You are correct that the team are a small - and often stretched - resource in North Ayrshire, and they absolutely go that extra mile to try and get the best outcomes for people.

We have progressed a number of developments to try and improve access times to SLT, and will continue to look for ways to grow the number of speech and language therapists that are available locally.

Thanks again for your kind comments - I wish you and your family all the best for the future
