"High blood pressure"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Scottish Ambulance Service / Ambulance Control Centre

(as the patient),

I'm still recovering from cardiac surgery. My head seemed to split for the pain. I measured my blood pressure and the reading was I considered very high and when I phoned for an ambulance I was refused as non-emergency.

I drove with my daughter to A and E. After some preliminary checks, I was told by a doctor that his boss said that I had to go, and if my head felt splitting, I wouldn't be able to move my arm and leg then I would have to come back.

He also told me they could not prescribe me any medicine as I would have to see my GP. In not many words - die first, then run to PRI.

Dear Regulator,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us on CareOpinion. I am very sorry to read about your experience. This must have been quite frightening.

All of our 999 calls are taken through a recognised and licenced triage system that is utilised all over the world. The information provided in the 999 call is entered into the system and it then determines whether an emergency response will be allocated at that time. If you would like to raise this as a complaint then my team would be more than happy to assist and we can have the call reviewed. If you would like for this to happen please email scotamb.feedback@nhs.net with the full details and we can try and help.

I am pleased to read however that you managed to make your own way to the Accident and Emergency department and I am confident NHS Tayside will also reply.

I hope that you are on the road to a full recovery and I wish you all the very best.

Kind Regards

Alan
