"My son’s care during day surgery."

My son is 21 and has a learning disability. Unfortunately he has to attend hospital for many different appointments and procedures and usually finds these stressful.

Last week he had a minor operation booked on day surgery and was very anxious about attending, I had real trouble even getting him through the doors. But, once inside everything went smoothly and his anxiety was put at ease by the incredible staff. Our nurse on the day ward, Dave, was patient with my son and adapted what was needed to suit him and keep his worries at bay. On an incredibly busy ward he made sure he had the extra time needed for my son.

We were also assisted by Nick, the learning disabilities nurse, who helped keep a sense of calm and kept my son chatting and relaxed. He is a fantastic resource for the hospital and my son feels like he sees a friendly face which is reassuring for him greatly.

The anaesthetist and his team were fantastic at reading the situation and did everything they could to keep my son calm, even letting me help with getting him to sleep. They all treating him with respect, patience and dignity and we couldn’t have wished for a more smooth and positive experience. A heartfelt Thank you to everyone involved, it really makes the next time we need to visit so much easier.
