My husband was in hospital as he suffered a stroke . I spent 10 hrs a day in the hospital trying to help him as much as possible.
I quickly noticed that he was in a very busy ward . Where there were a lot of emergencies happening, there were 24 patients in this ward and some were at the end of life, so as you can imagine all patients needed support in many ways.
1 night I was sitting and my husband needed 2 nurses to support him to the toilet as he couldn't walk good at this point although he tried so hard every day, he was so determined to get there by himself ASAP. And after 3 weeks he did.
However this night he needed 2 nurses and there were only 2 on the night shift, I thought how on earth can they help all these patients on their own with buzzers going off, phone ringing, patients needing toileting, BP, temperatures and drips to be done. It was really terrible to see.
I think something must be done about this.
I feel that more staff should be doing night shift and NHS really need to employ more staff on the night shift to cover the workload, it's impossible to cover this amount of patients. No wonder there are falls in the ward to deal with on top of everything else . Big thanks to all the staff in critical care also in ward 11 who cared for my husband much appreciated.
I'll be honest most nurses were very caring a few were tetchy but I has to say they were way under staffed.
Time to stop the falls, more staff needed to help with the heavy workloads especially night shifts.
