"His surgery should not have been cancelled"

About: St Richard's Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My relative received terrible patient treatment when he attended a pre-op clinic last week for hip surgery.

He had an ECG - and was told by the nurse he has an irregular heart beat and they would have to cancel his operation because they said they didn't want him dying on the slab.

He went for an emergency ECG the next morning at his GP surgery as he was so concerned - his GP told him there is nothing wrong - he does not have an irregular heart beat and his surgery should not have been cancelled.

He's now waiting for a new referral .......

Dear Sir /Madam,

As this is anonymous we can't look into the specific patient circumstances and would urge you to contact our Patient and Liaison Service (PALS) who will be able to investigate in more depth and hopefully put your, and the patients, mind at rest. You can contact them on 01243 831822 or email PALSChichester@wsht.nhs.uk.

I will try and encourage the patient to contact your PALS team. He's terrified of doing anything that will "upset the system" at the moment, including making a formal complaint - he's had written confirmation now that his hip surgery has been cancelled and he's also now deeply concerned that he has a heart condition. He is waiting for a cardiology appointment so that hopefully the cardiologist will confirm his heart is fine (as per his GP diagnosis) - but he still then has to go back on the waiting list for his hip.

Our PALS team are there to help patients, it's an advice service and by contacting them he is not making a complaint and will not upset the system. So I would urge you to please ask him to contact us for an informal chat. We can then help and offer sound advice and hopefully alleviate any concerns he has.
