Following increasing bladder retention problems I made an emergency appointment with a doctor unknown to me, Dr Burns. From the moment I described my symptoms Dr Burns was pro active. I had an internal examination, bloods were ordered for that day, the hospital was contacted for an ultrasound appointment, he made a double appointment 2 days hence for a full examination and he was going to arrange a bladder scan. This reaction was all the more surprising as two weeks earlier I had seen my own doctor with exactly the same symptoms who, without an examination, told me I had a blockage in the urethra which was very common in women, changed to a bladder infection when urine sample dipped subsequently found not to be an infection, I went away with antibiotics. Later the same day I received a telephone call from Dr Burns to return to the surgery for a bladder scan. Later that evening he rang me to advise that he had the blood results and they were clear but he thought he had felt a mass. The second consultation took place and I had a further internal examination and he confirmed to me the presence of a mass and advised he was putting me on the two week emergency pathway. He took time to explain this and reassure me. Of course I was worried at this totally unexpected turn of events but reassured that everything that could have been done had been done. Everything moved very quickly from then culminating in the removal of a large ovarian mass and a radical hysterectomy. The mass was subsequently found to be benign but had it been malignant the speed of Dr Burns reaction ensured that no time was wasted and I am very grateful.
"An excellent consultation and diagnosis"
