"Gave birth to a premature baby in nicu"

About: St Michael's Hospital (Bristol)

I recently gave birth at 33 weeks and my baby is currently in nicu. My personal experience at st Michaels has been really disappointing this is the second child i’ve had here and I thought my experience the first time was bad this time was 10x worse. When my child was born he had many complications and the cardiologists thought he wasn’t going to live, I was delivered by c section and had a traumatic time as he came out not breathing for 25 mins and was rushed straight to intensive care. My time in ward 73 was fairly ok but the one thing that disappointed me was the midwives in the ward encouraged me not to pump as they thought he was going to die. My baby survived and because I was told not to pump my milk dried up so he’s on formula now which I’m super disappointed about. I don’t think that you should ever be so certain because now the baby really needs the milk whilst he’s in nicu and I can’t provide that for him . Also in nicu the experience has been horrendous some of the nurses who work at st Michaels seriously need to be retrained, so many times i’Ve been left in tears at this hospital. I feel that working in such a sensitive environment means that they working with so many vulnerable and emotional women so kindness would really go a long way, it’s clear many of the nurses working here actually hate being nurses and it shows.

We’re so sorry to hear about your experience at St Michael’s Hospital and how much distress this has caused you and your family. We have passed your comments on to the person in charge so they are aware. If your son is still on NICU, please speak to the sister in charge who will be in a navy uniform, and will be able to help and provide support. If you would like to, you can also contact our patient support and complaints team who can look into the matter further. They can be reached via psct@uhbristol.nhs.uk or 0117 342 1050. Your post on here has been left anonymously, so the team will need a few more details including your name.

We understand that this must be a very stressful time for you and appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Kind regards,

UH Bristol
