"My stay"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / General surgery

(as a service user),

Again I find myself back in hospital due to bein in so much pain from having my left kidney removed this month and had a weeks stay then. Some nurses great but others need to work on bedside manner, but the catering staff were amazing and easy to make conversation with, as the cleaners too. But managing my pain has been horrendous and after a weeks stay and with me still in so much pain, I felt they pushed me to leave the hospital, and I felt I wasn’t listened to and I was just felt as if I was puttin it on...

I have never been the one for hospital, so for me to say I’m still in a lot of pain wasn’t easy, but on the day I actually went home I had the pain team visit me and I was told by them they wanted to change my meds around slightly and see how I would get on with it for few days before decision made to send home and once due my meds the nurse told me she was waiting on my new medication plan to come and start and then that never started and be told I was being discharged .

I was ok coz I thought the new pain meds plan was what I was leavin with and go back to go if not workin but on getting home I went thru my medication and they had forgotten to add my main pain medication and it wasn’t even the new plan so was left with the meds that were not working. I rang the hospital to say about my meds missed and the person said yes I’m sorry they were in the other cupboard coz bein a controlled  drug so had to go without it.

So getting back to today and bein back with continuous pain and not being able to get comfortable been in for 2 days now coz refused to come back coz the care, but husband forced me so here I am and iv been left for 4 hrs in pain before meds given - even tho I’d spoken to 4 nurses then and collapsing in agony. also they don’t take notice as apart from bein helped and told by nurse she gonna get pain relief as Drs want regular paracetamol given thru iv I’m still waiting still in tears with pain coz she gone off to do other things and bloods .. maybe they need to sort 1 patient at a time

I’m a quiet person and don’t like to be the one who constantly rings the bell or fuss if I can’t reach summin coz I will try to do myself but when I’m told summin that is happening and then I’m just dumped to back of queue coz I’m quiet and calm

Dear Constantpain,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, I am so sorry to read about your stay with us where you have been in constant pain. This is certainly not how we want any of our patients to feel.

We would really like to look into these particular events for you; if you would be happy for us to do so or if there are any other concerns we can help to resolve for you please contact our Patient and Family Experience (Complaints) team by calling 01872 252793 or email rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net. If you are still in hospital, we can arrange for one of the team to come and see you on the ward. Once we have received your details, a Case Worker will get back to you within 3-5 working days to discuss your concerns with you. They can then liaise directly with the services you are referring to and ensure that you experience is investigated.

In the mean time, I will share your story with the Pain team so they can reflect on your experience.

Best wishes,

Jess

Update posted by Constantpain (a service user)

I’m home now and still in some pain that iv had patches and a little bit of morphine plus my usual meds

during my last few days I was left to feel that still I wasn’t listened to so ended up giving up and goin along with what they said x but was left angry that they had dropped my morphine by half on that day which I was very stressed about and then when time for a patch to go on they were late and after half hour I rang my bell for a nurse to find out about where they were as already late to only be waiting a further 15 mins to be told they been discontinued which I was confused and by then in a lot of pain which I needed morphine but worrying if I used it would that be it for the day as been dropped. After another 20 minutes the nurse had spoken to the dr and it had been a computer error and they had re prescribed it so had to wait another 2 hours for it to go back onto the computer xx I was so tired but glad when it finally went on as it made a real difference in getting a slight relief and able to relax and lay comfy for a little while x
